Logical Reference Model & GSDN GS1

As a continuation of existing efforts to collaborate on the Global Visibility and Analytics Network (VAN), USAID and UNFPA agreed on the need for end-to-end (E2E) visibility of health commodities from donor funding and procurements through to deliveries to recipient countries and programs.

Both organizations founded a joint E2E Working Group and began meeting regularly to refine and deliver on key aspects of this goal. One such focus area was the development of a reference data model and data dictionary (collectively termed the “Logical Model”), which aimed to standardize on a common language, understanding of the underlying data elements of a Global VAN and define a reference model that can be used during the development of a system for end to-end visibility.

Starting in May 2014, USAID began its development of a Business Intelligence and Analytics (BI&A) solution to collect and harmonize Global Health data from its implementing partners and other key players. The underlying model for BI&A was used as a starting point for the E2E Working Group, and was evaluated jointly by UNFPA and USAID stakeholders and experts for its fit as the Logical Model. The Logical Reference Model is the output of that collaboration, and specific input and findings from UNFPA are included in this document in “Appendix A: UNFPA Findings."
