Dropbox Storage Optimization
Selective Sync
Dropbox’s Selective Sync feature allows users to choose which folders should be saved on the local computer. To configure it, click on the Dropbox app -> Your Initials -> Preferences -> Sync -> Selective Sync, as shown.
Upon completing step 6, you will be presented a list of folders accessible within Dropbox. Select only the ones you need and, to save space, regularly review and unselect the ones you do not need.
Smart Sync
Smart Sync helps reduce the storage space used by the files and folders that you already indicated that you need via Selective Sync. You can designate folders as online “online only,” thereby making them appear to reside on your computer even requiring only minimal space. Accessing such files, however, will require an active internet connection.
Within file explorer, you can select entire folders/sub folders/files and choose either “online only” or “local.”
Online only: You will only be able to access these folders/files when you are connected to the Internet. The files are exclusively stored online and do not require significant hard disk space.
Local: The asset will be saved locally, just like a normal file/folder, and will therefore require disk space but no internet access.
Whatever folder you want to make local or online only, right-click and then go to the “smart sync” option
The best way to optimize storage is to use a mixed of options, where a team folder itself like “0- Employee Toolkit” is online-only, but commonly used sub-folders like “Charge Codes” are local.
