Create Slack #announcements and more

Description

A few tweaks to make Slack better for open source project communities, from a blog post Tenly found. Notes below.

Also, what do you think about changing #general to #announcements and locking it down so only approved people can post announcements there. It was one of the recommendations I read about (I think from the resource you shared)

Yes - that is a good idea. Would those be announcements solely related to completion of software dev tasks?

brandon [1:12 PM]
I think we could announce each release (like 3.0.1 at the end of month), and maybe announce each showcase as a summary of what new work was completed. Announce new people joining the community. So it does not have to be only dev stuff.

tenly.snow [1:16 PM]
Great - and would those regular updates from the dev teams stay there too?

brandon [1:16 PM]
No, we would have the devs post their daily update in a new channel just for that.

[1:17]
(Those are so noisy and don't make sense to newcomers, so I'm thinking this #announcements idea would move that dev chatter out of the main room that everyone new is automatically plopped into.)

tenly.snow [1:17 PM]
That's great. Formalize our channels a bit more so there's differentiation between just dev activity, announcements, and eventually country users

[1:18]
which can stay as #help for now

brandon [1:19 PM]
Okay cool

Also - Carl from PATH pointed me to an invite link from Slack in order to join one of their channels yesterday - is that something we can do so you don't have to directly email us?

brandon [1:20 PM]
Not sure. Can you forward me the invite you got and I can see what it looks like to see if we have an equivalent?
